I teach writing and media production at American University in Washington D.C. Below is some my students' work from my class on the fundamentals of photography, audio production and video production. The students have little to no experience in multimedia production.
Photography
In the photography portion of the class, the emphasis is on composition and framing techniques aimed at taking pictures that tell a story.
Music Video
To help them understand how the images and the rhythm of a video are driven by the audio, I have students produce a music video.
Students take still photographs and set them to a favorite piece of music.
Dupe Oyebolu set a family reunion in Nigeria to the song "Wonderful World."
Student Nejela Almahanna used a song from the movie "La La Land" to tell a new story.
Event Video
Students get to experience what it's like to be a television news reporter by going out and covering an event in the Washington, D.C area.
Student Karen Ives reported on a fundraising event for refugee children.
Individual or Organization Profile
For their final project, students produce a video about a person or organization that's doing work they find interesting.
Sarah Medeiros profiled a Washington, D.C. musician
